... Joe said to Jeni, "Why don't you start a blog?" And she said, "ha." And he said, "You might get discovered and become a famous writer, then I could be a stay-at-home dad." And she said, "haha." And so, the Donger blog.
In general, I stay away from blogs, message boards, chat rooms, whatever. I have been known to lurk on the board of whatever current hobby I have (right now it's the parentsplace.com May 2005 Expecting board ... go figure), but I tend to think these things are for people with too much time on their hands. So, here I am, with my own blog.
In this episode, we learn what the heck the Donger is all about.
We were driving to Kansas City for a wedding, brainstorming boys names (Jasper, Albus, Smith, Tyrone), when one of us decided that Donger would be a great name. For anyone who didn't go to college after 1985, this is a reference to the movie Sixteen Candles, starring Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall, and Gedde Watanabe as the oh-so-un-PC character, Long Duck Dong, aka the Donger, with appearances by future stars like John and Joan Cusack, and Anthony Edwards.
Anyway, we agreed that Donger isn't exactly real name material, but would make a perfect nickname. Imagine: "I'll be right there, I just have to go get the Donger's jacket." "We'd like to come to your Super Bowl party, but can we bring the Donger?" Cool, eh? Well, the only name we could think of that could be altered to it would be Duncan. It's a nice name, but something seemed not quite right. And, as Angela and my dad later pointed out, Duncan is just a bit too close to Dunkin' (as in Donuts). So, no Duncan for us.
However, there's nothing to stop us from branding the kid with the name of our choice while it's in utero. It's not like the name will stick or anything (probably). Plus, as I get bigger and bigger, "The Donger need food" more and more often.
Tune in again next time for more tales of the Donger...
